Chamber Commends local donors and supporting companies that have raised more than $10,000 to feed the Hungry in Malta

Malta, NY – The Saratoga County Chamber of Commerce today announced that due to the generous support of local businesses and Chamber members, the creative “Give to Dine” program in Malta would continue through March 31, 2021. Corporate support from various local businesses has bolstered the program and also spurred a $2,000 contribution from the United Way of the Capital Region.

The unique Give to Dine program was originated in Malta in December 2020 through conversations between Nanola owner Shane Spillenger and Malta Economic Development Committee Chair Tim Dunn. Wanting to feed the needy, but not wanting to ask a struggling local restaurant to donate food, the program seeks donations of $25 to cover the cost of a weekly meal box that feeds a family of four. Beginning in December, generous local residents began donating in droves to support the program. Anyone in need is able to come to Nanola on Wednesdays between 4-6pm and will receive a meal, no questions asked, as long as supplies last.

Nanola Owner Shane Spillenger said, “Give to Dine has been a wonderful program where we’re able to feed those in need while still producing revenue. We’re all going through a tough time and this program has been an excellent resource to help our business while we help those in need.”

To date, more than 260 meals have been provided, feeding more than 1000 neighbors in need. Since early February, local and area businesses have begun contributing with businesses contributing including:

· Brix Wine & Liquor – a Malta-based specialty wine and liquor store;

· KPM Remediation – a Malta-based clean up and disaster mitigation company;

· Malta Chiropractic – a Malta-based medical practice;

· Saratoga Wine Exchange – a Round Lake-based wine and liquor shop;

· Unified Beerworks – a Malta-based microbrewery; and

· US Light Energy – a Latham-based renewable energy firm.

Saratoga County Chamber President Todd Shimkus said, “The last year has certainly proved that our County is resilient, creative, nimble, and most of all caring. This outpouring of support has helped feed the hungry, protect a local business, and inspire others to give. I’ve loved being part of the Malta Give to Dine program!”

This generous local support also drew the attention of the United Way of the Capital Region, as the organization tapped into locally-focused pandemic relief funds to provide $2,000 in needed support to extend the program. Give to Dine will continue provide meals to those in need through Wednesday, March 31. All dinners provided in March will be accompanied by information on area food pantry and food security resources to help those with a continuing need.

Inspired by the Malta program, Give to Dine programs are being developed by the Chamber in Corinth and Schuylerville and will be announced in the coming days.
